Harlem Shake at Saddleback Church’s High School Ministry

First we had the Holy Ghost Hokey Pokey at Rick Joyner’s Morningstar Church; now we have the Harlem Shake (google it if you’re not familiar) – only this time it’s at Saddleback Church’s High School Ministry.  You know what this reminds me of?  It reminds me of that scene in The Ten Commandments where the Israelites persuaded Aaron to build a golden calf and then they wantonly danced around it.

I’d definitely say there is sin in the camp.  Rick Warren boasts himself to be a leader, and with what the youth in his church are being taught, I’d say the future of the visible church looks mighty bleak.  Young revelers of today are the leaders of tomorrow – and they’re being taught this in the church!

Have a look.  This video was posted on Saddleback Church’s own High School Ministry Youtube page.

This Is Not Of GOD. You So Called youth pastors as well as the pastor of the churches that have this demonic music will answer face to face with Our LORD One Day. You Kids that attend such garbage need to turn around and run as fast as you can, when you see this going on in churches, schools, etc. GOD help you.

    2. Ray

“Con los terroristas” Spanish for “with the terrorists” lyrics of harlem shake. Has the Taliban invaded the church??? Any pastor allowing this material in the church should be sent down the road, looking for another job!!!

    3. e laney)

Rick Warren needs to come back to the cross and what Jesus did foon that cross us . This is not church! How our youth is being lead by sheep in wools clothing. Out lord is to be honored and glorified, this is neither. I would run from this church if that’s what you call it.

It all fits with the American Jesus. The real Jesus’ mission was announced by the angel before He was born – “He shall save his people from their sins.” This Jesus is all about earthly perks – health, wealth, and personal happiness, including getting high off his spirit like this video shows. That’s the one I came in contact with after committing my life to the Lord in ’75. It wasn’t long before the TV and books introduced me to this one. Thankfully, the real one brought me back to the straight path. If you want the real Lord and Savior Jesus, you have to repent of your sins and die to the life you built on them and build on Christ through his word.

    1. Myrna

Love this comment, it reminds me of the scripture that speaks of “another Jesus & another spirit”…The real, true Shepherd Jesus, will always lead His sheep back on the right path & praise God you followed Him! :)May I share your comments on my Facebook sight?

    2. stannj51

Hello Myrna, (I hope this reply goes under yours). Thank you, but the credit for the changes is how the Lord kept watch over me and, as it says in Ps 5:8 He “made his way straight before my face,” and yes, you may repost if you wish.

I saw the video that “no lnger” exists… it was vulgar and ungodly and doesn’t belong in God’s house. I cied… how can peple be so deceived???

    2. shelly mcclelland

Hi Linda, I agree, not because of my own brain, but because of the Holy Bible….We are living in the last days and men will be lovers of their own selves. Remember, There are some churches still teaching the full council of God and keeping the bride of Christ pure, but there are those that are not the bride of Christ that are synagogues of satan and that is where you will find people going to and fro like this, lost without the Sheperd…..Shelly

  2. David

Without trying to sound like a jerk, this is pretty far from the “Holy Ghost Hokey Pokey”

The circus over at Morningstar was attempting to make worship out of nonsense, trying to make an inane thought sound prophetic. They wanted to make worship in their own image and have been rightly ridiculed. In short, it was blasphemous.

This is a bunch of kids doing a modern version of pole-sitting or stuffing the phonebooth. Pointless? Yup, I’ll give you that. It’s not the wisest thing to do, but for reasons not mentioned here. There was no implication that this was an attempt at an act of worship (unlike Morningstar or Bethel) It’s not blasphemous or heretical.

Christians should think before diving in with the latest meme, but we shouldn’t be quick to compare them to pagan worshippers either.

    1. Ballerina

With all do respect, I disagree. Maybe it wasnt in the same lines as Morning Star, but it still remains UNholy nonetheless, it still portrays lack of reverence to a Holy God. False teacher is a false teacher, and Rick Warren’s Saddleback, though it may be disguised with less “prophetism” than Rick Joyner’s Morning Star, is still leading people astray. These kids are not being taught purity, holiness, self denial, humility, there is no fear of God anywhere in ALL of Warren’s “doctrine”. It takes alittle leaven to ruin the whole lump. Joyner, Johnson, Warren, Bell, doesnt matter, they are ALL leading people, especially kids, to another christ, not Jesus Christ.

    2. Maria

      Hi David,

While it may not be an act of worship, one would just wonder why make such a copy from the world? Is worldliness less “blasphemous”? Or has creativity for having a good time in a Christian setting – not while teaching or worshiping – taken an end completely?

I wonder why we are so eager to copy that which is so viral “out there”, but not as eager with the things of God (and that does not need to be heavy, dark and so on) …
We already swallow the horse nowadays…

      Be blessed

    3. Bunny

Oh, my goodness. Well before I was saved I was a Pagan Worshiper and I beg to differ with you.; All of this smacks of paganism.

  3. Lafe Tolliver

Wow! Sadly, this is being passed off as worship and praise to a holy God? I tremble for the church in which God is not viewed as holy and awesome. To enter into his presence with this foolishness and which is condoned by the “leadership” is a mockery of God and his holiness. What a sad commentary on this church and its leadership that they thought that this was funny and amusing to be done in a sanctuary. People of God, we are quickly losing it. Beware, God is not mocked. Could you imagine if Paul and James and Peter were to walk in this place and notice this confusion and mayhem and people would with a straight face tell them that they are glorifying God? I think that they would call down thunder from heaven on that heathen assembly. Why does the church absorb so much of world into its surroundings? Because the leaders have gone a’whoring after other gods and have left the ancient landmarks and are out for self glory and adulation….trying to please the crowd and not Christ. With some of the motions that are being done, what an abomination to place before the Lord. Talk about strange fire on the altar. WOW!!!!!

  4. Randy

While this may not fall completely in the blasphemous category, it bothers me greatly nonetheless. The ultimate litmus test of anything we do as Christians should be, “Does this bring glory to God?” I fail to see how this, and other activities of the “circus church” do so. Harmless fun? Perhaps, but to what end? What are the students in this video being taught? It’s a subtle undercurrent of follow the world, be cool, do what everybody else is doing. The true Gospel will never go “viral” because the world is offended by it. I’m not saying we have to be a bunch of stodgy holy rollers, but we should closely examine our activities. You can bring glory to God in ways other than worship – a Christian plumber can be upright, honest, fair and hardworking and therefore bring glory to God. Yes, even the way he solders a pipe joint can bring glory to God if he is giving it his best, as if the work is for God and not just the guy that hired him to do it. But this train wreck called the “Harlem Shake?” I just don’t see how it glorifies anything but a worldly fad and the students involved in this. Epic failure.

  5. Rev. Kate

Okay, here we go again. What in the name of Harry was that? That was in a church? Harlem Shake, huh?

Yessiree, Chrystal, it sure looks like that scene from The Ten Commandments movie.

Who is that guy in the T-Rex head thingy there; the dude in the front row, gyrating, bumping and grinding and the other cat in front doing some maniacal toe touching? Oh, let’s not overlook the jerk with the plaid shirt, shake that booty there, buddy!

Hey, they should sign-up for a dance class and redirect some of that energy; take Zumba classes; go to a gym and work-out; do something and keep church, church and dance with dignity.

The whole darned thing looks ridiculous, because what they’re doing is ridiculous. K😦

  6. Abraham

“It all fits with the American Jesus” ~ thanks stannj51~ very succinct and to the point. I suppose Todd B. has/had the Morningstar Holy Bam Bam Ghost, Benny Hinn the “This is your day for a miracle” Jesus on stage (but still waiting) and I should add we have had in the UK the Power of God ‘barking like mad’ stuff at Holy Trinity Brompton. This lot takes the crunchy cookie/biscuit, can it be topped I ask myself ?

  7. Doug Engle

And this is different (and worse) than the thirty million spoofs of “open gangnam style” earlier this year, how? Including by members of Congress, probably your own youth group (without notifying you), etc… I’m not defending it in the eyes of Scripture… but if you insist, let’s apply the same rules to Monday night football while we’re at it, right? Or your right to watch your favorite sitcom. Or any song you find yourself singing along to on the radio that isn’t by a Christian artist.

Never forget… we are the Church. God is not confined to what we do between 10 and 11 am on Sunday morning. And He uses us despite our best efforts to appear what we’re not… that which we are the other 167 hours of the week in our attitudes towards our neighbor, the lack of spiritual gifts we’re identifying and developing for His glory, the absence of spiritual fruit. And we have the gall to point fingers at a group of highschoolers just because they’re dancing “harlem shake” in a youth group promo?

And no, nobody ever suggested they were using it for worship. As if your church has never hosted a superbowl party.

    1. Chrystal Whitt Post author

My church doesn’t do any of the things you listed. First, be sure who your captive audience is and know their entire lifestyle before making comments like this. And, since you brought it up, we have never had a superbowl party, I do not watch sitcoms, and I only listen to praise and worship music. BIG DEAL! Whole point completely missed here. The point is that inviting culture into the church and excusing it has never EVER ended well spiritually. We are to mirror Christ, not the culture.

    2. Aaron Flet

WE are church that is supposed to be separate from the world, preach to the world… and not mock the values of the church. A leader is supposed to be upright and of moral standing. We are the light of the world. We are the salt of the world… and if we lose that then we are worthless.
A Christian artist glorifies who.. and who does this glorify? You gave some invalid examples.. It does not matter if it was for worship or not.. My house is a house of prayer… Jesus said that… did you skip that part.. omit it? I never read any where that said Jesus lets ROCK THIS HOUSE AND GET DOWN… did you? This is a disgrace and shame,,,,

  8. Doug Engle

Oh, and here’s what they’re actually doing here… they’re being part of this recent culture… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem_Shake_(meme)

Surely there’s better ways we as Christians can take advantage of the viral phenomenon in ways that are actually bringing souls to Christ than doing what is also virally known of us… “rightfully dividing the word of truth and wrongfully dividing one another”…

    1. unworthy1 - lyn

It would appear the visible church is clueless on who God is, namely, His holiness. This disorderly dancing, which is relevant to the culture, certainly does NOT promote holiness or godliness. How does this chaos bring about a deeper relationship with Christ, or how does this bring about any refinement? It doesn’t.
Defending trash like this simply proves how far the visible church will go to be ‘relevant’ with the culture. Where does Christ call us to be relevant? I recommend this sermon by Voddie concerning the culture – http://iamhis-lyn.blogspot.com/2013/02/adapting-to-cultureor-not.html

Most have a ‘god’ they’ve formed from their own understanding, which is a far cry from the God of the Bible. We are called to be separate from the world, not to mimic it. We area called unto holiness and Christlikeness, not to shake our booties in such an unholy manner.

It would do America good to look for the ancient paths, to read the writings of men of old and see how they had such fear and reverence for God; men like Spurgeon, Edwards, Bunyan, John Newton, Thomas Watson, Augustine, Calvin, etc… They understood the proper attitude and mindset concerning all things towards the Great I Am. What young people need is sound, solid biblical teaching from solid men of God, not some stupid fad like this video displays. This is trash, it’s also a sign of how defunct the visible church in America is; a shell of what it claims to represent, a lifeless form of religion that must pull off stunts like this to draw the unregenerate into its midst and fill the pews…the blind leading the blind. “”Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” Matthew 15:14

    2. mentation34

Having listened to this “Rock Music” video again, supposedly in a ‘Christian’ context, did a bit of research on alpha beta and delta sound waves ~ how they can affect the brain and more alarmingly how the brain/mind can be influenced. Some theorists say that this level of noise, and the dissonance it produces (The auditory experience of sound that lacks musical quality; sound that is a disagreeable auditory experience) can literally disconnect the mind from reality and permit the invasion (not the best word perhaps) of evil and possibly Satanic influences. Whereas quality music will have the opposite effect of course, so it’s more than interesting to try and work out why certain Christian youth leaders permit this?

    3. unworthy1 - lyn

I also want to add this, the ONLY thing that brings souls to Christ is the preaching of the word, and the power of the Spirit to convict and regenerate dead sinners. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16. If you think this garbage is ‘bringing souls to Christ’ you are just as deceived as the individuals involved in this garbage. Here is the problem with the visible church in America, we are using man-made methods to ‘win souls for Christ’, none of these methods work. Why? Because salvation is wrought by God, through the preaching of sin, the Gospel and repentance. Salvation is a result of God’s grace, NOT stupid stunts like what this video portrays {see Ephesians 2:8-9}. You have no understanding of how God saves the unregenerate Doug, you believe salvation results from ‘cool, relevant stuff’ like this. I pray the God of heaven and earth will open your understanding, that He will reveal your wickedness to you, that God the Spirit will regenerate you, bringing you to repentance and God the Father will gift you with eternal life. Christ has done all that is necessary to atone for sin, He also has lived the perfect righteous life that neither you nor I could live. He has satisfied God’s wrath at sin for all who God saves. Unless sinners see themselves as wicked, as hopelessly lost and cry out for mercy, doing things like the Harlem shake will be their reward; and it’s not lasting.

The churches in America lack deep biblical understanding, there is no study by professing Christians on essential truths like the doctrines of grace, the depravity of man, the election by God of those He saves, the need to be born again, or literally, born ‘from above’, the need for repentance, the continual walk in obedience and striving for holiness, the attributes of God, the work of the trinity in the saving of a sinner, etc.
Instead, the unregenerate are told to repeat prayers, to make decisions, to choose Jesus, invite Him into their hearts; all these ‘methods’ are from man, they are NOT found in the Bible. Man cannot do anything to bring about salvation, all the ‘activities’ the visible church keeps itself busy with will not make one bit of difference in the end. Unless you are born again, you will die in your sins. I don’t care how many times you do the harlem shuffle, I don’t care how involved you are in church activities, I don’t care how much ‘effort’ you put in attempting to save others, including yourself; the Bible is clear….unless you have been supernaturally re-birthed by the power of God through the Spirit of God from the inside and bear fruit as evidence of this transformation, you are spinning your wheels, you are dead in sin, unregenerate and under wrath. That is what the Bible teaches and it is NOT popular because it puts the ball solely in the court of the Almighty.

    4. Aaron Flet

      1 John 2:15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
      1 Peter 2:12

If we fail to separate ourselves from the world and its sins, then what good are we? If we fail to walk with a sense of purpose and knowing that we are of Christ, then what good are we. If my bible and Jesus’s words are not good enough, that I have to forgo the Love and wisdom of the Holy Spirit, to bring sinners to Christ and I have to climb into bed with sin and the world… then I am no longer Christian… I am worthless in the eyes of God,,,
Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. 1 Corinthians 6:15

  9. Abraham

“It all fits with the American Jesus” …very apt ‘stanjj51 to which I could add the “Todd Bentley Holy Bam Bam” plus “the Alpha Course sure way to eternal Salvation” and the “Beny Hinn miracle of healing – now you see it now you don’t” You’ve just got to laugh though I suspect Holy Spirit does grieve a lot, for our sake, not His?

    1. stannj51

Hello Abraham, The popularity of the American Jesus has grown because of the wild success of his apostles Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Joel Osteen, Robert Schuller and the myriad TV money preachers and Hyper-Grace teachers. He is popular because he tolerates sin. For example, he accepts remarried divorced persons among his sheep, where the real one counseled his disciples to maim themselves to avoid hell over adultery. Seeker-sensitivity, contemplative prayer, inclusiveness, no repentance, mystical experiences are all characteristics of the American Jesus. The real one did not flinch from condemning new believers as murderous children of their father the Devil; the American one just wants their money tithed to his rich and arrogant ministers. They can come as they are and stay as they came. This friendly one is the one the multitudes itch for. It’s worse. He is being exported through books and powerful American media. Africa has gone crazy over him. India can’t wait for Benny Hinn to knock people down and pretend to heal them. They will literally kill themselves stampeding to get to him. Rock and roll in church services fits this “AJ” to a T.

  10. haui

    1 Corinthians 14:33
For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

  11. nona tan

This is very scary. Do they really believe that they arè pleasing God with what they’re doing? This is blasphemy. Why were they allowed to do this? This is serious. God have mercy on all of us…..

  12. Aaron

This is so grieving to see. I am a young man of 24 years old and to see this in the church breaks my heart. Even though you may see this in a majority of America’s so called church today, God still has a remnant of young men and women that desire a knowledge of His word and His ways. I am reminded of Daniel and the three young Hebrew boys who stood alone upon God’s word and it is my heart’s cry that I and others who will heed will follow this example. Daniel 1:8 says: “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.” Oh that this would be the cry of the young people’s hearts and not this other foolishness! I didn’t get saved by this foolishness and entertainment, I got saved when he revealed my utter need for Him and my lack of righteousness and need for the righteousness of Christ. Come back to the altar of repentance church!

  13. Brenda

I thought/believed Rick Warren to be one of the best teachers. Im now confused. I think Rick Warren personaly take a look at the controversy and comments this video an teaching of is causing and its posted all ocr fb …why im cking it out . That does not appear to be praise at all ??!!

    1. Brenda

Rick warren an church…everyone wants an explanation for and to know the answers to all the comments … must be grieving to The Holy Spirit

    1. Chrystal Whitt Post author

I encourage conversation here, but comments will get deleted if words like hypocrite are thrown around, or if a poster castigates everyone else on the forum with whom they disagree.

    2. Chrystal Whitt Post author

No, Todd, I allow conversation as long as it’s conversation and not insults castigating fellow posters here. You don’t like me? That’s okay. Sincerely. Call me a hypocrite all day long. I don’t care because I expect that; but, don’t insult fellow commentors/posters on this blog… it won’t be approved.

    3. Todd L.

I didn’t call anyone a hypocrite?! I said that the dance is no big deal and it seems like you would be more in the vein of King David’s wife than David himself.

    4. Todd L.

A problem? I mean you’re taking to task all the pastors who have done a Harlem Shake video so I don’t see an issue with me pointing that out, no not at all. But I guess if you want to pass judgment without being willing to let others share their thoughts on your post then that’s up to you. I haven’t been rude at all, just shared my thoughts.

    5. anastasis

Todd L, your comparison with the famous biblical story of David and Michal is wrong. For starters, David’s dancing was worship, but I look at this video and I see no worship whatsoever, just a load of people being stupid. Their focus certainly isn’t God. Ask yourself if anyone in this video has worship even remotely on their mind – I doubt it somewhat. And incidentally I dance in worship on a regular basis so I’m absolutely not anti-dance.

    6. stannj51

Todd. I expected a comparison of the Harlem Shake to David’s worship dance. To make an equivalent between the two, we would have to have strong evidence that David borrowed both the music and method of dancing from the Philistines.

  14. Rev. Kate

@ Bunny…Ms, give me a hint and educate me as concerning your comment… please, educate me, I need to know. K

  15. Tracy Schlotterback

When I see something like this, I really don’t know what to say anymore about the so-called “church”. I used to attend a big box Rick Warren and Bill Hybel church model until I began to read my Bible for myself. So many lies and false teaching in the “church”.

  16. emergingclarity

This is a prime example of a “Seeker Sensitive Church.” Oh, heaven forbid the SSS offends people by saying what they do is wrong…..nah, instead, embrace it and then work the Gospel in here or there. NO. Preach the Gospel and let those who get offended, get offended; and let the Holy Spirit convict the hearts of those He is calling to be saved. We are SUPPOSED to be offensive to the world, not to fit in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. unworthy1 - lyn

    Todd L,

If you can use Scripture to support your view of why this harlem shake should be considered biblical, then do so. If you merely have an opinion, that does not prove this type of behavior is biblical and acceptable to a Holy God.
Do not forget, God killed two men for offering strange fire before Him- ” Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.” Lev. 10:1-2
To worship God is not something we should do in vain, or by using worldly means. God is holy, separate, utterly apart from His created beings. He is worthy of reverence and fear, not silly fads like this video displays. He must be worshiped in spirit and in truth. Only those the Spirit of God regenerates will truly worship Him in such a way, all others resort to silliness like we see in this video. True reverence and fear of the Lord would deem this display of the Harlem shake as hideous, an insult to a God who is so very holy.

  18. shelly mcclelland

I am not shocked at all with this behavior…. Reminder…..The bride of Christ is everyone whom God has chosen before the foundation of the world…The chosen people of God are a gift from the Father to the Son and she is holy and pure……Any church that does not keep themselves pure, seperate from the world, and teaches the whole council of God’s infallable Word is a synagogue of Satan…..So you see, they are worshipping their god…

  19. mentation34

Thank God Tracy – and I say this without piety on behalf of self and many others – that you ‘began to read the bible for yourself’ ~ the only answer against the false & the counterfeit in church today. I’ve just ordered a New American Standard Bible from Amazon at a very low price, because it’s a sound translation as far as I am aware, and being so cheap I can mark it all over, write in it, highlight texts etc., and not feel guilty ! (I’m laughing) And I’ll bet I’m older than most on this blog, but have never lost my fascination for what the Word of God is saying and how no true believer can ever consider he/she knows it all!

  20. Sam Londe

In Rick’s defense, and remember people he’s our brother, no one’s walk is without fault and chances are it’s the youth pastor(s) that should be in front of the accountability line. Let pray for Saddleback not condemn them as heretics. Sad to say that Christians are amongst the only groups that shoots their wounded. And I don’t condone any of that nonsense in the house of God.

    1. unworthy1 - lyn

Rick Warren is our ‘brother’? Based on what?!
Here is just one of many faulty unbiblical beliefs from Rick Warren, this is from an interview he did at the Huffington Post, “I have many, many gay friends, and have worked around the world with them in gay organizations to try to stop AIDS,” he said. “We’re doing ‘World AIDS Day’ this weekend at Saddleback Church. My wife and I have given millions of dollars to help people with HIV/AIDS and have worked with gay organizations on that.
“What about the love part, though? I hear about the AIDS part,” asked Hill.
“It’s not illegal to love somebody,”
“But you think it’s a sin,” Hill asserted.
      “No, it’s not a sin to love somebody,” Warren said. Warren replied. “It might be a sin to have sex with them,” he added. “It might be.” {see full story at http://christiannews.net/2012/11/29/rick-warren-uncertain-if-homosexual-behavior-is-sinful-says-gays-go-to-heaven/}

Compare Rick’s statements with the word of God; Rick says it isn’t a sin to ‘love’ somebody, God says ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.’ Leviticus 18:22 – God does not call it love, He calls it an abomination, a sin that is detestable.
Rick Warren says it ‘might be’ a sin to have homosexual sex, it ‘might be’, in other words, he’s not sure. We’ve already seen in Leviticus the error of Rick’s thinking. If you still are in doubt, read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, or Romans 1:26-27, or Matthew 15:19.

Any man or woman who is uncertain what sin is certainly is not my brother or sister, especially one who claims to ‘pastor’ a church! If Rick were a pastor, he would not without a doubt homosexuality is a sin. He would also know it is based on lust, a desire for what is forbidden, not love. He would also know the wages of sin is death. Rick Warren is not qualified to be a pastor of the church of Christ, he is qualified to be a pastor of a church of the enemy.

Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them – Ephesians 5:11

  21. Carol

I have seen this, along with tons of other abominable displays at “churches”,including one where there was a young man on a cross, and then while the others are “dancing” depicts “Jesus” spanking a girl whose hair is likened unto horns. Oh I say the church is beyond apostasy, they have seared their consciences with a hot iron, they have been given over to depravity, this is judgment from God, by giving them over to this madness. Is there little wonder why Judgment will begin with the “church”?

  22. Shirley

We make things so complicated. It really just comes down to “would you do this if you were face to face with God?”

  23. Abraham

Stan, greetings, interesting comment and without losing the thread I would like to add this point and I hope it will encourage those like Aaron who know the Word and quotes Daniel 1:8 – a nice piece of exegesis. Looking into the same Word of God I come across two challenging texts that set me thinking, Matt. 22:14 where Jesus says “for many are called but few are chosen” and 2 Peter 1:10 “Brethren be all the more diligent (determined & purposeful) to be certain about His calling and choosing you ..that you will not stumble” . This by careful study tells me that those who hear the Gospel correctly and fully preached or taught, become the Kleti , ‘called ones’ to become disciples and followers of Jesus and all that this entails. However, Strongs explains this as invitation, to participate in Kingdom Blessing but this is in the passive voice, sorry to be pedantic, and not the ‘active’ tense. Now, the Gospel has been preached to them by chosen ones, apostles and so on, and the whole plan is that those called become those who are chosen and thereby “worthy of such a high calling – holy calling – upward calling” The Greek word here is Eklektos – chosen and elected – In essence all those who truly love our Lord Jesus Christ, even potential martyrs ! Now we can see how that other scripture comes into force, Mark 13:22 “False prophets and false Christs will arise … in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect” I believe that there’s a clear inference here that in the end-time, huge swathes of those who are called but do not follow 2 Peter 2:5-9 (too long to quote here and I ignore seekers who have sadly been presented with a false gospel) can easily become the Devil’s unwitting acolytes, his foot-hold for spreading apostasy and all manner of deceit and corruption – leading to, of course, the one world religion of the false prophet. This is happening today with much greater impetus. Quite simply, the elect cannot be deceived, but they will be persecuted, reviled and possibly martyred. Warning ministries are essential though they will draw Satan’s venom. Hebrews 3:1 “and so holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus — the Apostle and High Priest of our confession …”

    1) Yes, I can agree this does not belong in church. I agree. 2) To call these people satanists and whatnot? Good people, lets not forget you were all teenagers as well and either did dumb stuff and/or unholy stuff. Not everybody is perfect, except Christ. I’m not saying accept it, but watch what you say. I don’t know the background of the church, but I can tell you that you are not to gossip and talk trash about others on the web. Is that not a sin yourself? Morals to the story: Kids will be kids, PRAY don’t TALK SMACK, and finally be still and let God take care of things. God bless you all.

Hi Joey, there is also something that Christ gives those who walk in Him and it is called decernment. We must also rebuke those things that are wicked and not of God and show these young people the way to glorify God, not themselves. If you remember in the 10 commandments God swallowed them up by the earth because of their wickedness and disobedience. Never compromise and stand firm and defend the faith with the whole armor of God..shelly

Whilst I appreciate that Joey’s warning comes from a good heart, we must remember a couple of things first : This subject (Harlem Shake…) is not born of God, nor Christ and certainly not the Holy Spirit. My authority here is the Spirit Himself. Those ‘called’ by the gospel but not yet chosen will have a hard time in understanding what is going on – sentiment comes to the fore, hence ‘a warning not to talk trash nor to, in effect, criticize ~ however, it must be pointed out forcibly that we are talking of the ‘eternal security in Christ’ here, so the warnings of Discerners of the Truth surely supersede the more banal warnings of the un-elected ones who have still to access “the knowledge of the Son of God to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13) If anyone would like to assure me that this nonsense comes anywhere near this context, I shall be pleased to hear !

Who gossiped and talk trash towards any one person? Your accusations are without merit. It was the actions of these people being condemned, and the church who allowed it…NOT the young people involved. Maybe this will help you, here is the biblical definition of gossip; from the Greek word psithurismos, it’s defined by Thayer’s Greek Definitions as ‘a whispering, i.e. secret slandering’. Strong’s defines it as ‘whispering, that is, secret detraction: – whispering.’ It comes from the root word ‘pseudomai’ which means ‘to utter an untruth or attempt to deceive by falsehood: – falsely, lie.’ No one here has told a lie about any one person, no one here has slandered any individual.

Sadly, most churches produce this kind of fruit because the gospel they present is an accursed one; they tell sinners to repeat prayers, to make a decision, to invite Jesus into their heart. This is not how someone is saved, salvation is by grace {Ephesians 2:8-9}. You must be born again {John 3:3}, which literally translates ‘born from above’. You cannot do this, you cannot bring this about by any human effort. When the Gospel is distorted, it bears false converts who act in ways that are not pleasing to God. They are unregenerate, doing worldly things and passing it off as ‘worship’, or ‘church’. What most fail to understand is this….God is Holy, Holy, Holy. He is worthy of reverence and awe, not stupidity like this type of dancing displays. We must approach the God of the universe with the utmost and highest reverence coupled with a holy fear. The problem is most cannot tell you one thing about the attributes of God because it simply isn’t taught. Instead, foolishness passes as acceptable, God is defined as all love and that’s it. Sadly, first and foremost, He is holy; He is mighty, righteous, merciful and just. I encourage you to read A. W. Pink’s ‘attributes of God’, it will be a blessing to you. I couldn’t view the video as it has been deleted, but after reading the comments well all I can add is I’m not surprised. I have run from the so called “churches” I steer far clear of them now. Even those I thought were Biblically sound have small seeds of deception, so small as yes even to try to deceive the Elect through desensitization. If you want to know what the biggest indicator of how far the apostasy has gone in almost every church, just call in the late hours and listen to their voice mail tell you that their “Normal Business Hours” are blah blah blah.. “Business Hours” hit the nail on their coffin. How far has the church fallen when they are all calling preaching the Gospel a “business” without even a second thought about that statement! We are in the last days, And Speaking of the Book of Daniel we are in the age of the 10 toes, Next stop Armageddon. GOD have mercy on us. “My people perish from a lack of knowledge” Hosea 4:6

I agree with what you say. The pastors I these churches leading these kids straight to hell. It’s demonic what they are doing in the Lords house.

I also just discovered that many of our beloved hymns were written to be sung to tunes taken from bar songs. I am so disappointed that those hymn writers didn’t have the good judgement to be more holy.
I guess you should live in little holy communes and have nothing of any worldliness. Don’t buy products from worldly companies that support gays… don’t buy products from any non Christian…

    1. Ed

and ultimately have no influence… as Christians we are called to holiness, but not to be prudes.
We often do silly things and and have a sense of humor and have fun without becoming demonic or pagans condemned to hell.
Have a little grace and love with your salt please.

the myth that hymns were written to be sung to tunes taken from bars has been around for a while, you may be interested in this -http://www.apologetix.com/faq/faq-detail.php?faq_q_id=89
      and this – http://www.patheos.com/blogs/geneveith/2010/09/luthers-bar-tunes/

As for this video, you consider this to be ‘fun’…how should the worship of God be taken Ed? Should we approach Him with a sense of humor, moving and gyrating aimlessly and consider this to be acceptable worship?

Again, let me draw your attention to Leviticus chapter 10….
‘Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what the LORD spoke, saying, ‘By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'” So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.’
Pay particular attention to the last verse Ed, ” By those who come near me I will be treated as holy, and before all the people I will be honored”. Is this ‘fun’, as you call it, acceptable to a holy God? If strange fire brought instant death because it was NOT commanded by God, why would you think this type of chaotic worldliness would not be considered profane? Consider this commentary on the last verse, from Matthew Henry —
“I will be sanctified in those that come nigh me, whoever they are, and before all the people I will be glorified. Note, First, Whenever we worship God, we come nigh unto him, as spiritual priests. This consideration ought to make us very reverent and serious in all acts of devotion, that in them we approach to God, and present ourselves before him. Secondly, It concerns us all, when we come nigh to God, to sanctify him, that is, to give him the praise of his holiness, to perform every religious exercise as those who believe that the God with whom we have to do is a holy God, a God of spotless purity and transcendent perfection, Isa_8:13. Thirdly, When we sanctify God we glorify him, for his holiness is his glory; and, when we sanctify him in our solemn assemblies, we glorify him before all the people, confessing our own belief of his glory and desiring that others also may be affected with it. Fourthly, If God be not sanctified and glorified by us, he will be sanctified and glorified upon us. He will take vengeance on those that profane his sacred name by trifling with him.”

What is much needed in this day is the in-depth study of the attributes of Almighty God; I have already included a link to His attributes written by A. W. Pink, I do encourage you to read this, along with your bible, and study who God is, namely, His holiness.

    3. Ed

William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, an extremely evangelical organization that did much to help the poor and the drunks in the streets, used the music of popular tunes for hymns. In the biography, “William and Catherine Booth: Founders of the Salvation Army,” by Helen K. Hosier, it states the following:”Satan would have to be battled within his own strongholds, and any means was justifiable, William decided, if it would attract sinners to listen to the message of salvation … Thus it was that as the work grew, the music and street parades attracted increasing crowds of people who scorned the regular churches. ‘Why should the devil have all the best tunes?’ Williamreplied when chided for appropriating music of popular tunes for his hymns … “

God doesn’t need you to make the gospel more relevant in order to bring the lost to Him. The whole context of Scripture teaches us that if we won’t hear his word, worldly tactics won’t work. The apostle Paul made it clear that God chose the foolishness of preaching to spread His gospel because it removes all valiant efforts of man in reaching lost souls. Get it? You can use worldly methods if you choose, but God chose the foolishness of preaching. And why is it called foolishness? Because many people think it is foolish to just simply preach the Word. No, they think they’ve gotta bang their head and light their pants on fire to convince people to heed the gospel. “Well,” you may say, “people won’t listen if we don’t approach them on their own level.” Well, if they won’t listen UNLESS you do that, then they won’t listen WHEN you do that, either. Remember, we don’t draw them…the Holy Spirit does. Share the gospel and let God do His perfect work. Believe me, He is able. Any time man steps in and tries to do the work of the Spirit, it comes out looking like the Harlem Shake and other absurd man-made efforts.

You don’t have to mold the gospel to the culture…it transcends all culture. You merely need to share it.

    5. Ed

I guess more to the point. There is no evidence that this stupid song was being used for worship. NONE!
None of you will find that evidence, but you will cast slurs and slander names and people. You abuse and accuse people of shameful pagan and demonic behavior.
One thing I know it’s that Satan is an accuser, a liar, and the father of all lies.
I find the behavior and tone here more troubling than stupid sophomoric behavior.
Ask yourselves and look for biblical support “who may dwell on his holy hill”?

too bad you lack discernment and biblical depth in your understanding of what is acceptable worship. The Jesus you follow is more than likely one you formed in your mind, one that accepts whatever you feel is ‘right’ concerning worship. Most base their worship on experience, on what they get out of it. Worship isn’t about you, or what you gain from it. I feel for you and pity your lack of discernment, as well as your baseless opinionated accusations. Your motive and goal seems to prove yourself right, this alone speaks volumes on your depth of understanding true biblical Christianity.

    2. Ed

Joey’s tone seems more in keeping with Rom 8:1, Psalm 15, Psalm 24… I wonder why that seems so offensive?
