The Problem with Not Questioning

Common sense takes people a long way.  Some folks say you either have it or you don’t.  Some will say that if you walk in the spirit, you don’t need common sense.  I’ve heard charismatic leaders say, “Don’t question this!” or “Don’t try to figure this stuff out… just go with it!”

Trinity Broadcasting Network is probably the biggest “christian” broadcasting channel on the planet.  The money that goes through there is more money than we little folks will ever see in our entire life time.  The network spans the globe; the owners own mansions, leisure jets, and stay in penthouse suites.  They drive cars with a price tag that would be enough to buy a house for normal, hard working people.  But, let’s not question it.

A glitter-dipped minister looks at the tv screen and tells you that if you’ll send in your last dime, God will heal you.  So, a lonely widow who has been diagnosed with cancer, who is feeling desperate, who is feeling forsaken sees that smiling face and she feels hope.  He would never lie to her, he’s a man of God.  She gets what last few dollars she has and she sends it to him.  Two weeks later she dies; but, he takes her money and goes back to his ivory castle.  But, don’t you dare question it.

A cracked out prostitute lays in the ghetto and trembles as her body is wracked in pain.  She hates the drug she’s addicted to but she must have it.  Her body needs it, or so she thinks.  It’s the only thing that will stop the physical pain.  It’s the only thing that will numb the emotional pain, if only temporarily.  The memories of sexual abuse come, but they don’t hurt as bad if she can’t feel.  The more she uses the more it eats her alive… but the memories keep coming, and the pain won’t stay away.  The burning cycle she is on kills her more and more every time.  She checks into a seedy hotel and curls up on the bed.  She turns  on the television just for a little noise and sees that nickel slick preacher staring back at her.  “God wants to prosper you.  All you need to do is to take out your check book and sow into that to reap a financial harvest.  God has promised he will prosper you.”  She stares at the screen and the pain goes deeper.  She has very little money.  How could she possibly afford a blessing from God?  Despair wells up until she feels nothing but hate.  “Where was God when ______ was sneaking into my bed every night?”  Where was His love then?”  She looks at the screen and hears that God wants to prosper her… but there are no answers to the questions that really haunt her.  Instead of the gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation, she hears a message about prosperity, which only has the power to make this preacher richer.  Deciding to take a chance that maybe God will help her, she finds her last five dollars and sends it in.  Two weeks later she dies of a drug overdose, but this man’s coffers just got fatter.  But, let’s not question it.

A heartbroken father holds his toddler in his arms.  Three weeks prior, his child fell into the family pool and drowned.  The medics were able to get a heartbeat, but the brain damage was too extensive.  The doctors have given up hope – there’s nothing else they can do.  In desperation, he checks his child out of the hospital and goes to a healing crusade.  He sits there, rocking his child and begging God for a miracle.  This preacher can heal him.  He’s done it so many times before.  He has donated to this man’s ministry for years – surely there’s a miracle for him.  The preacher with the million dollar smile and $2,000 suit comes to the platform and speaks of all the marvelous things God has done through him – and this will happen to you too, but only if you sow into what the spirit is doing.  The desperate father watches as the money buckets come out – he watches as people donate – he watches as the money overflows – and he watches as the preacher leaves the stage.  He looks down into his child’s face.  The million-dollar preacher walks away even richer – the father walks away and buries his child five days later.  But, no…don’t question it.

If God had never sent us His Word, if He had never taught us the way of righteousness, even common sense would demand outrage at this.  Even as sinful and depraved human beings, we look at that and see the perverseness of it all!  It should sicken us that these men (and even women) preach this abominable doctrine, and scam people in such a sleezy way, and they do it all in the name of God.  Common sense and common sense alone tells us this.  Or at least it should.  Many don’t reason it out.  Many don’t want to.  They believe these lies no matter how perverse it is.

But, don’t question it.  Don’t you dare.

    wow… sharing this! Awesome post.

  2. Ron says:

A simple “thank you” hardly seems adequate, yet nothing I can think of would mean more.

  3. Barry says:

Hooray, someone finally said it,its ok to ask questions,God Bless you!All the trouble we got into years ago was due to not asking questions.People ask questions,if u sense in your spirit that something is wrong, cuz I would say its the Holy Spirit nudging you.A lot of these prosperity, signs and wonders, deliverance ministries dont want people asking questions, they want to keep people in the dark in regards to what they are really about and what they are doing.Once they have you they dont want to let you go cuz you become a meal ticket. If you dont ask questions you wont know what is true or false, and if you are told not to ask questions, dont let the door hit you in the rear end as you are running out of the place.Thank you so much for this post!

That’s the problem. ‘Don’t touch my anointed…’ has been used and is being used to gag Christians from questioning but what these Pharisees and pulpit sharks have forgotten is The Bible has give us the right to QUESTION, COMMENT, TEST and JUDGE any crap they spew and do. It’s this refusal to question that has given and is giving these sharks the opportunity to lead the sheeple astray. I just wish MORE people will speak up and question these glib pulpit sharks. It’s time to stop monkeying around, people of God!

  5. I have wept and sobbed and even sinfully questioned God for allowing this to happen, but my complaints were stopped by a passage in Jeremiah 5:30-31 “An appalling and horrible thing Has happened in the land: 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their
own authority; And My people love it so! …” I do not doubt there are many true Christians blinded by these charlatans, but over all, their followers and supporters fit the pattern of 2 Tim 4:3-4 leaving both donors and these savage wolves equally guilty: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.”

  6. Kiwi Dave says:

of course, any and all who do question are either threatened with arresst, physically tossed out of the meetings and told “not to question the “man of mammon”, ie “man of god”. It’s either that or the trusty old “touch not my annointed…”.

But what they all forget is this, as it is written:

“But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.” Jude:10 – 13 KJV

Total and complete agreement. Awesome post.

  9. Excellent post. I grew up on TBN and watched it all throughout my college years. I can’t believe I ever believed this stuff. But I did. Until God opened my eyes and saved me. With God all things are possible!

Chrystal, you not only hammered the nail, you drove it through the wall! Good work, baby sister. God bless you for telling it like it is.

  11. Eli says:

THis is good. and you know, it reminded me of a show i watched just last night. It’s a new show called “The Will”, some of you may have seen it. It’s about the struggles over money and wills when rich famous people die. well, last nights episode was about pastrix Darlene Bishop’s rich song-writing brother. What a money grubbing selfish woman. I never even knew she was embroiled in this money fight until i saw that. I knew she was WoF. it was just crazy. She took $100,000 of the life insurance that should have went to his kids, and gave it to her daughter to build a house.
It’s all about the cash with these people.

“Master, how should my brother and I divide our inheritance?”

Remember that not even Christ wanted to step into someone’s inheritance blood feud.

  12. Lady D says:

Wow!! You nailed this false prosperity gospel in a few paragraphs – thank you~

  13. ian vincent says:

These “ministries” only exist at all bcos Christians have been dumbed down into thinking that it is wrong to question.

Even when your local church pastor is preaching his sermon, you should have the freedom to raise your hand and question what he is saying, see 1 Cor 14.

That’s where the root of this thing began, in traditional, mainline evangelical churches.

    Chrystal,
How do I get your new posts to show up on my email? I am lost with all this “following” and “follow” that show up.

I’d speak up even if they threw me in jail. If God is for me who can be against me. I hope this young lady is saved and I pray that she will not fear man. Speaking out and exposing the crookedness (if it’s really true) of TBN shouldn’t be worrisome if you have a clear conscience. Shoot I’d rather sit in jail with a clean conscience smack dab in the will of God than to live in lies in a beautiful mansion any day.. All the people they’ve been misleading to hell. Countless # of people. I’m no better than they are and I hope and pray they repent while they can. I believe this is one of those warnings from the LORD that’s so obvious that these people need to heed the Fear of the Lord!
    ..
i think of John the Baptist. He was FREE in jail but Herod was a slave to his sin imprisoned in his mansion…

The fear of man will prove to be a snare but he who fears the LORD will be safe”

  16. Francesmarie says:

Has this been forwarded to TBN and put on face bk or twitter? Eye opening for some who do not know…and a yes and amen to your article….

  17. John, at the bottom of this page, there are two tick boxes. One says, “Notify me of follow-up comments via email,” and the other one says, “Notify me of new posts via email.” Just tick one or both and it will subscribe you.

  19. Carolyn says:

Hurting someone else for one’s own personal gain is, to me, the best description of sociopathic behaviour. Sacrificing the sheep for one’s own selfish gain is the best description of ravening wolf.

‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: “As I live,” says the Lord God, “surely because My flock became a prey, and My flock became food for every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, nor did My shepherds search for My flock, but the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock” therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall feed themselves no more; for I will deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them.” (Ezek 34:7-10)

Watch out you false shepherds….there’s a day of reckoning coming soon!

  20. Eva says:

Thank you for this blog post..this is very true…

  21. In every sense of the word,it would be almost impossible to put it better than Eva did.Thank you, most loved, most precious sister, true child of The Most High God! I could weep with joy at the deep wisdom of your heart’s cry for God’s confused, bewildered people being preyed upon by these vicious, vile, smiling wolves! But Oh that day of reckoning is near!Repent,liars,scam-artists,religious racketeers, charlatans, pulpit pimps, hirelings…Repent, while there is yet time,I beseech you with tears!! Heed Sister Eva’s words,Church!!! Repent!
