Joel Osteen Warns Congregation About the Dangers of Pork and Shellfish

Sin isn’t something that alarms Joel Osteen; he won’t preach on it for fear it will offend and make people feel bad.  But, pork, on the other hand, really worries him.

He warns his congregation against the harm of eating pork and shellfish.  He says he doesn’t want to take a chance on putting that junk into his body, so he made changes for health sake, and to honor God.

He worries more about the body, that will return to dust, than the soul, which is eternal.  The things put into the mouth will be eliminated, but the things we digest into our spirit can and will destroy us.   Osteen would do better to preach repentance, and the principles of living a holy life before God; preach Christ and Him crucified, for Osteen has a responsibility to God, and his congregation to teach the narrow way that leads to life.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not cavalier about proper nutrition.  I’ve seen how poor nutrition destroys people’s health.  It’s just amazing that Osteen, who will never preach sin and repentance, will gently rebuke his congregation about their dietary choices, but will never provide soul-saving teaching that will preserve their eternal souls.

    I’m glad the Lord Jesus fulfilled the law and told Peter to “not call unclean that which I had called clean”. Thoroughly enjoyed some bacon with my wife’s home made biscuits. Mmmmm good! Osteen can all he wants to live under the law – Paul wrote a letter for such as him.

  2. Just some more apostate drivel being spewed from this false prophet.

    If the TRUE GOSPEL is not preached in a setting that claims to be Christian, then it is nothing but ANTI-Christian.

    No fence-straddlers in the universe.

  3. Phil says:

    I am sure he had a lot of people here in Louisiana upset at him, boiled crawfish, shrimp, crab are quite tasty creatures!!!
    Hmmm, and I sure enjoyed that BLT for supper too!
    But thankfully my church teaches, well, like the Bible…you know that we are SINNERS and need to repent and by faith accept Jesus!

    I THOUGHT THERE FOR A WHILE YOU WERE SAYING THAT OBAMA HAD COME OUT AGAINST THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY STIMULUS PLAN. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.

  5. GoinNCircles says:

    O’Steen appeals to many in the New Age movement since he doesn’t preach the gospel & therefore offend them. This group of ppl is very ‘in tune’ with this idea. In fact, many of them are vegans who consider any meat consumption cruel & ungodly (their version of god, that is).

    For the confused Christian, the uninformed, & those who do not know their Bibles, he’s a preacher who is accepting of all ppl (if he didn’t accept them, well..that would be less $$ for him, now wouldn’t it?). However, for the true believers he is a false prophet, and we shall proclaim it to all who will listen.

    He is a snake oil salesman/cheerleader. It’s a sad state of affairs that he’s hijacked the pulpit.

  6. Carol says:

    He indeed warns against the things that go into the body, but is “eliminated”. While the things that are in the heart that has not been dealt with in his so called preachings. What is in the heart needs to be dealt with more than what goes in his/her mouth.

    He’s more concerned with something that is superficial rather than the sin issues. This is a reflection that he’s superficial. More important about how one looks on the outside rather than the evil heart.

    This is the spirituality that appeals to the “green” new agers, as well as those so called “Christians” who don’t have a clue as to true Biblical Christianity but more of a cultural belief system that blows with different winds.

  7. Carol says:

    The lack of preaching and warning of sin is the issue here. Osteen is never teaching of conviction of the sin issues. There is no sense of needing a Savior and that Jesus alone is the way to the Father. There is never a humiliation of ones own flesh and seeking the Father for cleansing and reconciliation. There is no dying to the flesh and the desires of the flesh. There is no reminder of the sins of our flesh and the need to repent of wicked and fleshly ways.

    He’s cultural and this appeals to the basic nature of flesh. Dangers of pork and shellfish is not to remind us of the Old Testament dietary laws and what God required of Israel before Jesus came to fulfill those laws. It’s just a way to justify man by man’s ways of making himself better on his own, and in this teaching, eating those foods being a danger, is to the fleshly body, not with any spiritual connection.

    If I need my self esteem boosted I can watch Joel. But If want want some sound biblical teaching, he aint it.

    We had a church leadership meeting early this week. One of our denomination’s local leaders was invited to this meeting, and was invited to comment when she had questions.

    At one point we came to a place where we were identifying potential ministry risks for the year. I identified the apostasy of the “christian” church as a threat as we go out and win souls. My experience is that the world doesn’t give you nearly as much trouble as so-called christians who think you shouldn’t be preaching or handing out tracts. Anyway, this leader asked how I knew there was apostasy. She really hadn’t seen it (!).

    I went on to talk about feel-good messages, no talk of sin and repentance, approval of sinful behavior once considered unspeakable, etc. The look on her face was like I had landed here from another planet.

    Joel Osteen can only talk about what he thinks we shouldn’t do for health reasons, but can’t utter the word sin let alone condemn it. The fact that the church can’t talk about sin, and very few notice the problem, is the most sure sign that it has lost its way…Including my denomination that has “salvation” in its name.

  11. anti-whackos says:

    Acts 10:9 refutes the sermon of Joel Osteen.

    His teaching is also flawed from the point of simple biology and common sense.

    Joel contends that an animal with a 4hr digestive system is incapable of ridding itself of toxins while cattle which has three stomachs and a 24hr digestive system is toxin-free.

    Biology 101 tells us the size of an animal determines its digestive system and that the length of a digestive system has nothing to do with imperfect/perfect elimination of waste.

    Human beings have a 4hr digestive system; does this mean like the pig, we are full of toxins? If yes, why aren’t we dead?

    Cows, despite their so-called superior digestive system, have been known to carry killer diseases; ever heard of foot and mouth disease and the Mad Cow Disease which almost crippled the entire cattle industry in Europe?

    Poultry contains the highest count of salmonella bacteria and unlike pork must be thoroughly cooked before being eaten, otherwise it causes death by botulism.

    Fish from certain countries, with poor aquaculture practices, have been known to carry high levels of mercury and lead and are banned in many First World countries.

    Joel Osteen, by this sermon, is leading many believers back into bondage. It will stumble those who have been set free to live a life of self-control and moderation and lead them into observing rituals and superstitious nonsense.

    Joel Osteen needs to preach Christ who died for the sins of man and is raised from the dead and sits at the right hand of the Father. Joel Osteen needs to preach repentance from sin and turning back to Jesus Christ.

    He should not talk about poisoned meats because his ideas are so loopy even a third-grader will laugh him out of class.

  15. Chris says:

    How could anyone forget to post this:

    1 Timothy 4
    1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
    2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
    3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
    4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
    5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

  16. Carol says:

    This reminds me of straining a gnat while swallowing a camel.

    He nit picks about abstaining from eating certain foods, yet he does not teach about abstaining from greed, power and grabbing all the glory for oneself in his best life now mentality.

    He’s a false teacher, he preaches his own gospel, certainly not the Bible.

  17. Brandon says:

    Not only does he make up new laws, he says that following them honors God and will bring him blessing. Then, he rebukes his crowd for being rebellious against God. He is classic a legalistic false teacher.

  18. Linda says:

    God’s word is true cover to cover. tghat includes the Old Testament. god gave the dietary laws for our good health. God said he gave the dietary laws to “Keep the diseases of the Egyptian’s off of us”. If you want disease- keep eatting it. It has nothing to do with salvation. It has to do with health. God wants his people healthy.
    and to the person who said Peter was told all unclean foods were ok to eat…you have not read the whole story! Peter NEVER ate any of the unclean food and he was given the interpretation: Do not call any man unclean! and Peter went to the gentiles house and gave him the gospel.
    3 times Peter did not eat.
    So because Joel teaches the whole councel of God- you condemn him. If you get coronary heart disease, worms, hepatitis, you’ll take the advise of a worldly doctor or take a handful of pharmaceuticals (drugs!)to cure the diseases you brought onto yourself and ask everyone you know to pray for you. Does God have any obligation to heal you when you make fun of His Word and call it of no effect?
    “if you love me keep my commandments for they are NOT grievious” saith the Lord. and “whatsoever a man sowth, that also will he reap. if to his flesh- destruction…”
    God wants you healthy so you can go forth and serve him and accomplish His work in the earth.
    I pray that God, through Christ Jesus, opens your mind and heart to the truth in His word and that your appetites are brought into line with the Word of God, for the glory of God the Father and that He makes you a vessel worthy of honor as you obey Him, for we know that His word is true and that “faith without works is dead”.
    brothers and sisters, it is NO harder to obey God in dietary laws than any other habit that would hurt you. I assume you do not wake up every day saying- I have to fight myself not to smoke, or cut myself or shot up illegal drugs…no, you would not hurt God’s temple that way- so if you would not pollute your body with tobacco or pot or crack or alcohol- why would you play russian rollette with having to cook your pork well enough to kill the worms, or did you devein the shrimp enough to not get sick. they are scavengers- they consume the dead and waste- WHY would you want that in your body after you know the truth.
    “for you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”..in this case, from the diseases of the Egyptians.
    Joel never made it a point of salvation- just to be your healthiest- why would you find that offensive?

    • Chrystal says:

      It’s offensive because he will not preach on sin, but will preach on the bad trappings of wrong dietary choices. Whether we eat healthy or not, it is eliminated. Sin is not, not without the mercy of God through the sacrifice of His Son.

      Why is that so hard to understand?

  19. Emily Atteberry says:

    I agree with sister Linda we are not “released” from eating Biblically clean food. She is right on! Joes Osteen is a false, apostate teacher, so far as I know, the dietary message is the only one he has ever done according to the Word of God. He never teaches on sin and repentance only his feel-good message which will lead him and his followers to destruction. Why are we “offended”? Yeshua told us this will happen, JO tickles their itchy ears and they all love it so.

  20. lyn says:

    Linda, you must retract this comment, ‘So because Joel teaches the whole councel of God- you condemn him’…this is a lie. Osteen does NOT preach on sin, on the need to REPENT, on heaven and hell, on eternal punishment, on the fast approaching judgment of God on a wicked, vile, sinful nation such as America. And just why has this nation fallen so far from God? Because people defend and believe UNGODLY men like Osteen.
    The reference to Peter not eating what was ‘unclean’ does not coincide at all with Osteen’s false teachings. The dietary laws from the Old Testament for God’s people were established, for one, to set them apart from their idolatrous neighbors. God implemented specific restrictions in regards to the consumption of certain animals {Leviticus 11:25,26}. In Peter’s vision, God reveals to Peter what he has called unclean God has now made clean. God had abolished the Old Testament dietary restrictions, and moreover, made unity possible in the church of both Jews [symbolized by the clean animals} and Gentiles{symbolized by the unclean animals}[J. MacArthur commentary]. This was accomplished through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
    We are not under the old testament covenant, we are under the new covenant, salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Christ is the new covenant!!, ‘But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ Hebrews 8:6-10
    NO ONE could keep any of God’s commands under His old covenant, NO ONE can keep them today. That is why we are under the covenant of grace, the undeserved favor of God to a wicked sinful people, the reconciliation of lost sinners through the cross of Jesus Christ.
    Osteen is much like the religious leaders of Jesus day, he is preaching a legalistic gospel, i.e., you must do this, you must not to this, etc. THAT is NOT the Gospel.
    A previous post by Chris brings to light a very sobering warning from the Apostle Paul…
    LINDA, PLEASE READ THIS WORD OF THE LORD:
    1 Timothy 4
    1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
    2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
    3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
    4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
    5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. {Thanks Chris for posting this}

  21. anti-whackos says:

    Linda,

    How can you equate pork and shrimp with drugs, nicotine, etc? You’re starting with the wrong premise and ending up with the wrong conclusion. Your analogy is COMPLETELY FALSE.

    Pork/shrimp is not a hallucinogenic. No one has ever gotten high or intoxicated on pork and shrimp. Pork and shrimp do not alter your mind. They are also not addictive: there won’t be any withdrawal symptoms if you cut pork and shrimp from your menu. (You might miss it very much but you won’t get the shakes, fever or delirium.)

    You won’t steal money from your parents, prostitute yourself, or mug some stranger in a park just to obtain pork and shrimp. You don’t have to go to a dark alley and talk to a hoodlum to score pork and shrimp. Hoodlums do not hide pork and shrimp in their coats and try to sell them to underage kids at school and in the playground.

    Teenagers don’t secretly stash pork and shrimp under their beds for sharing them illicitly with friends. They won’t drop out of school or skip classes just to have a snack of pork and shrimp. They won’t forget who they are, end up in bed with someone they can’t remember and fall pregnant just over a platter of pork and shrimp. A man does not beat up his wife after having a meal of pork and shrimp (in fact, he’d probably kiss her). A mother does not beat up her kids after pork and shrimp!

    Pork and shrimp do not render you senseless and stupid; you won’t need to see a psychiatrist for eating pork and shrimp; you won’t start resembling ghoulish Amy Winehouse for taking pork and shrimp, for Pete’s sake!

    Speaking about ‘consuming the dead,’ are we still living in the Dark Ages when pigs roam the streets of our villages consuming our refuse? Don’t pigs eat livestock feed same as cattle, sheep, poultry, etc? What sort of farming practices do they carry out in Joel Osteen’s neighbourhood where pigs eat dead animals and raw garbage?

    Mr Osteen, we hold you responsible for breeding cuckoos in the church!
