The Emerging Church continues to “emerge.” Robert Schuller must be beside himself with delight!
Many may believe Robert Schuller is not a threat in Christianity because he’s so preposterously apostate. I’ll never know where that line of thought comes from. Robert Schuller not only has a vast television outreach, but his monstrosity of a church called the “Crystal Cathedral” is packed to the seams with eager followers who come to hear Schuller and his guest speakers every week. What should trouble us is that even though Robert Schuller is so blatantly heretical, many many Christians still follow him.
The Rethink Conference, at which Schuller will be a speaker, is scheduled for February 5 – 7, 2009. The speakers scheduled to speak for that event are:
- Ravi Zacharias
- George Barna
- Dan Kimball
- Bill Dallas
- Henry Cloud
- Dr. John Townsend
- Nancy Ortberg
- Miles McPherson
- Bob Dees
- Kirbyjon Caldwell
Most of the above list doesn’t surprise me, but one speaker who continues to baffle me is Ravi Zacharias. I have watched Zacharias in lectures and debates at universities and tuned in to hear him preach biblical truth for years, but over the past few years he has been showing a trend of compromise which is extremely troubling. When he compromised at the National Day of Prayer in Washington, D.C., by agreeing not to pray in the name of Jesus, people defended him and said he had to obey the rules laid down before him by the prayer breakfast organization team. This latest move of compromise cannot be defended.
Could we ever imagine the Apostle Paul, or the Apostle Peter joining themselves with such a heretic in a joint effort to “evangelize?” Nay! They would not!
Robert Schuller has subverted the way of truth for many years. Teaching a “positive message” to his congregation, the message of sin was eradicated and the doctrine of self-love and positive thinking prevailed. With no teaching of sin or the fallen state of man, there is no need to preach the sacrafice of God’s only begotten Son, or the need for a Savior. With the parade of New Age teachers who have graced his stage for years, his congregation has been exposed to a diet of teaching which teaches that there is a god inside of them, and the God of the Bible is denied. The full significance of what Jesus did on that cross is maligned. His congregants aren’t told they are sinful and fallen people who are desparately needing salvation, they see themselves as “someone special.” Joel Osteen wasn’t the first to preach this message, Schuller perfected it long before Osteen came along.
Robert Schuller wanted to start a church where even the lost could come and be comfortable. If our pastors can preach to sinners and they be comfortable with it, then God is not the central focus of that message. Do we want to comfort sinners or bring them to the knowledge of their fallen state so that they can turn to the Savior and be saved?
Here is the premise of the “Rethink” conference:
Sometimes it just takes one Aha! moment to change you forever.
We’ve all experienced it: one of those moments when something said by another person triggers an immediate “Aha!” in your mind. You feel like a safe-cracker working a complex lock when suddenly the last tumbler falls into place and the door opens for you.
Sometimes you’re not even aware that there was something nagging at your mind – something puzzling or unsettled or unresolved – but then a thought from another mind brings everything into focus, and all of a sudden, you get it. And when you get it, you’re empowered to change something about the way you live, the way you lead, the way you work, the way you minister.
That’s what Rethink is all about: Getting into the minds of influential thinkers and innovators, and taking away the Aha! moments that empower us to create new possibilities for our lives. Source.
Is that why Jesus died? So we can feel empowered to create new possibilities for our lives? Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you shall all likewise perish.”
This is from LetUsReason.org:
Robert Schuller, in his book Self-Esteem: the New Reformation, writes, “I contend that his unfulfilled need for self-esteem underlies every act …over and over again that the core of man’s sin is not his depravity but a “lack of self-dignity”, Self-esteem is … the single greatest need facing the human race today.” (p. 15) He calls this esteem “divine self-esteem” (p. 95). “If the gospel of Jesus Christ can be proclaimed as a theology of self-esteem, imagine the health this could generate in society!” (Self-Esteem, the New Reformation Word Books, 1982 p. 47)
His new reformation is not repentance or a renewed sense of dependence on God and his word. No humbling our self before Almighty God. In fact it is the very opposite a boosting of ourselves to a “divine self-esteem.” The Bible tells us that our righteousness is like filthy tags before God (Isaiah 64:6), that we’ve all sinned and fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23), and that there are none who are righteous (Romans 3:10). All this and more is denied by the philosophical musing of a man who claims to represent Christ, His gospel, and the church.
In fact he states “I don’t think anything has been done in the name of Christ that and under the banner of Christianity that has proven more destructive to human personality and, hence, counterproductive to the evangelism enterprise than the often crude, uncouth, and unchristian strategy of attempting to make people aware of their lost and sinful condition.” (Time, March 18, 1985) Source.
Perhaps Ravi Zacharias doesn’t see that appearing with such a heretic as Robert Schuller lends credibility to his ministry. Those who are weak in the faith could see this and believe Schuller is a man of God because they don’t know any better, nor are they strong enough in the word to distinguish the truth from the lies. I can’t imagine any of the Apostles linking with heretics in order to spread the gospel. The apostles were not worried about being “relevant” to their times, they knew they would be a peculiar people. They knew the world would take offense at the preaching of the cross, and were prepared to preach it at the expense of their lives, calling upon us to test the spirits, and not to accept any doctrine other than the one that was handed down through their teachings.
In these dark days, I urge all who read this to bury themselves deep in God’s Word and grow in truth. Without it, we are targets for a merciless enemy. When times get so confusing that those who are supposed to be God’s ministers let you down, God’s Word will never lead you astray.
“Not a threat in Christianity because he’s so preposterously apostate”!?!??!
Ouch!
Perhaps he’s not a threat to those who are otherwise occupied on a Sunday morning, but there are plenty of people who need to hear the Gospel, who turn on their T.V. and see him all robed-up and official looking, preaching a sermon. He doesn’t have a creepy wife, he doesn’t ask for money in a threatening way throughout the sermon. They have no reason NOT to think that this is what Christianity is. To people who do not have the Gospel he is a friendly Christian minister who does church on T.V..
Many are deceived thinking that this is all there is to Christ, and are content with this weekly meal of Chicken Soup for the soul—-of course they are Christians! Others are deceived because they reject this positive thinking junk for the silliness that it is, thinking it represents Christ, never knowing that there is Good News out there for them!
He seems like such a nice fellow, but people who don’t see him as a monstrous threat to the preaching of the Gospel really need to get out more (or stay in more?)!

Chrystal,
Thanks for this — we see Godly men being swayed to yoke themselves with the ungodly… which, as you say, gives credence to the ungodly.
Obviously, the solution is to major on the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and the simplicity that is in Christ.
Some of those men listed may have majored on the Gospel at one time but have apparently lost their first love.
Dan Kimball answered my criticism of him and his philosophy on one of my blog postings about the emerging church. Like so many, he is un-apologetically happy in his emerging apostasy.
Thanks for exposing the lie of “modern theology,” which is certainly neither “modern” nor Biblical theology — but is a lie as old as that old Serpent’s in the Garden of Eden..
In Christ eternally,
ExP(Jack)

Thank you for this. I attended Schuller’s college and knew his son there. By God’s grace I have now come to see how deeply heretical Schuller is. Many, many people look to him as the face of Christianity. We are in desperate times and we must cling ever more tightly to our Lord and His word.

You ever seen that snippet on “Sesame Street” called “One of these things”? The typical “What’s wrong with this picture” expect with annoying music and muppets?
Anywhoo, don’t you think someone in the marketing department printed out the dais and thought that same thing when his or her eyes crossed Ravi’s name?
I’m just saying.

I am really heartbroken in hearing that Ravi will be speaking at the apostate Schuller’s conference. I just learned about this at Lighthousetrails and came across this blog and article in doing research. I appreciate the writing of the paper to expose this for the sake of the elect and even peradventure that Ravi will repent and forsake his error.
Personally, I do not follow Ravi’s ministry but in times past when I have heard him speak, I have greatly profited from his presentations and ability to articulate truth in very powerful way. Yet all this is for naught in my eyes if one is compromising with unbelievers and apostates.
In looking at his website, I read his speech given at the prayer breakfast and was very troubled by the words. Beautiful from man’s perspective, yes, but is this how Paul would have spoken? My great angst comes from asking the question how can one speak to a group of people, the majority of whom are lost and leading this nation into the NWO, about prayer when they don’t know God and have dead religion (if even that)? For the LORD does not hear the prayers of sinners and those who do not go through the one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.
And to not prayer in Jesus’ name to meet the demands of the NDOP committee, then whose name is one praying in? Is this a pinch of incense to Caesar? Might it have been better to turn down this grand opportunity and taken a stand for truth instead of compromise?
I pray Ravi will repent for if he continues down this path there is no telling where it will end and how many sheep he will cause to stumble.
Peace in Christ,
bro Michael

I know for a FACT that Miles McPherson is attending to share the Biblical Truth to all who will be there. He did the same thing last year. He does not water down the true Gospel message for ANYONE.
Perhaps Ravi Z. is doing the same? Just a thought.
Perhaps it is necessary in this day and age of heresy and apostasy to infiltrate the heretics and apostates in order to steer them back in the right direction?
If they don’t, THAT’S when the Sola Scriptura Bible-based leaders may have to eventually “shake the dust off their sandals.”

“Perhaps it is necessary in this day and age of heresy and apostasy to infiltrate the heretics and apostates in order to steer them back in the right direction?”
Or maybe this day and age of heresy and apostasy is a judgment from God ala 1 Peter 4:17 because we’ve allowed the infiltration of these heretics and apostates who refused to be steered back in the right direction?

Very true, Ken. However, I’d like to know your opinion of Pastor Miles’ attempts to share the truth at their heretical get togethers?
Speaking of “refusal to be steered back”, the “gay christian” movement is a perfect example of those who refuse to be steered back in the right direction. Several other bloggers and I have posted biblical evidence of their heresy – but they don’t care – AT ALL. What matters most is their “feelings.”
When do we “shake the dust off our sandals” in such a case? I’m not sure – are you?
I, and many others, keep trying to reach them. Sometimes we just need to pray from them.

Years ago I made a comment that the “wolves in sheeps clothing” will more than likely come from academic circles. They look great on paper, are quoted as ‘experts’, are difficult to refute, and have the awe of the general public. There are many followers of Christ who are also academics and do a great work, however, academia is a great place for a wolf to hide; almost instant authority and credibility. What do people think wolves will look like? Wolves?

Christine,
Please know I say this gently, k. I’ve not been impressed with what I’ve seen from McPherson as yet. The Adam and Eve “blinged out” opening of the new venue was not right.
That said, in a setting like ReThink he’d be dealing with a language barrier. By that I mean, as with Ray Comfort at the Word Faith conference, these people reinterpret Christian terminology.
For example to Rob ert Schuller “sin” is “negative self-esteem” so unless one very specifically defines their terms those to whom they “witness” to simply think they agree. The speakers there would all claim to be Christians anyway.

Thank you for your article. I’ve seen the downgrade of Ravi as well and I do believe he is showing his true colors now.
Jude’s point is well taken:
Jud 1:4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
And Peter’s:
2Pe 2:1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.
False teachers secretly sneak in, creep in, slither in, unnoticed for a time perhaps. That is why God has gifted the local churches with folks that have the spiritual gift of discernment and wisdom…if only Christians would heed His warnings!
I think this is a good lesson in testing EVERY teacher, pastor, author, speaker, and singer, by the standard of Scripture, no matter if they have been solid in the past. No one is above being deceived nor being tested. We need to be accountable to the local church and teachable to the Word and the Holy Spirit.
May HIS sheep never compromise and always stand ready at arms, ready to do battle (Eph. 6) and help our fellow soldiers to be strong and courageous, willing to stand alone for HIM if necessary, as we fight the War on Truth. It is, afterall and foremost, a spiritual battle WITHIN professing Christianity.

Oops…need to correct my last sentence. Meant to write:
“I, and many others, keep trying to reach them. Sometimes we just need to pray for them.”
Ken,
I am disappointed to hear that you are not “impressed” with Miles McPherson, but that is certainly your right.
I am not sure where you got this from:
Oftentimes, Pastor Miles says things with the kind of verbiage that young people can identify with. It is not meant to mock or replace the truth of God’s Word on the subject at hand.
I’m learning not to be too picayune about such things. As long as the RESULTS do not compromise the Gospel message or what is contained in God’s Word, then using terms that I’m not personally familiar with doesn’t bother me.
I will admit to you that I had the same reservations about Miles’ appearance(s) at both the “ReThink” conference and (especially!!) “The Secret” conference. However, when I listened to his presentation (and saw the results of people who attended that were searching for SOMETHING – but not knowing that they needed Jesus Christ) and then found out that out of all of the speakers, they saw the truth being shared by Miles, I had a different perspective on why he attended.
By: Christinewjc on September 16, 2008

One more brief point. When Miles was backstage, the previous speaker at The Secret conference was Tony Robbins. He told Pastor Miles (paraphrased here), ‘None of us believe in this “Secret bull****.’ Glad you are here to share the truth.’
Admittedly, it takes a very strong Christian pastor, leader and apologist to go into “heresy territory” and share the Gospel Truth. I, and the thousands who attend The Rock Church see this unique ability in Pastor Miles.

As I live this life and as I read the complete works of our beloved bible, with special attention to Revelation 17, The whore, I see her forming even now. A false bride of idolatry for a false christ who is against the authenic one and standing in his place. Look around at the work of the Emergent and Emergent- conversation- friendly- people, and see how they are ever drawing more religous people groups of false gods into the fold, all in the name of “jesus”. This is nothing but a very simplistic counterfit of what Jesus has done with in the real truth. The false comes together as “one” in peace, for a new earth, with all religous forms under “Jesus”. The truth tells us that Jesus alone brings his blood bought church, who he is the head of and we are his body, we are one and we await his glorious faith- birthed coming kingdom of both a 1000 years, but also heaven come to earth. The mystery of iniquity Satan in dwelling a man who is head over the global structure vs the mystery of godliness, the holy, righteous God Almighty indwelt in the head of the planet as the 2nd and Last Adam, (Rom 5, 1 Corthians 15 last adam references) who is also king over the earth. Remember in Israel’s history, there was Saul, who was selfish and wicked and a king who eventually saught witchcraft and God kicked off the throne, while KING dAVID SAT PATIENTLY WAITING IN THE WINGS AND WAS THE CHOICE OF GOD TO RULE? sOUND FAMILIAR WITH THE TYPES AND SHADOWS AND WHAT WE WILL SEE UNFOLDING IN THE PAGES OF BIBLICAL HISTORY AS WE GROW CLOSER…)
I shiver at the late hour that we have found ourselves in as we see the whore forming, gaining power, making books and selling of those demonic propaganda at your local books stores, who are supost to be “christian”. You can pick up Brian McLaren’s garbage and the rest of the apostates of the Falling away prior to the antichrist, and those books are available at the place where you can pick up a bible warning you that those counterfits are coming and to be aware.
I would be surprised if my four year old son has an opportunity to grow into adulthood on this current earth situation as speedily as we see things heading.
May more hearts come to the knowledge of truth as the days grow shorter and more evil, and millions and billions are taken ignorant by this aborate teaching that all is one outside of the blood of Christ the only WAY. Kingdom come, Jesus Christ, my heart and glory, I am so waiting for you to come any moment and so is my immediate family.

Don’t forget, Ravi also rubbed elbows with the Mormons at their temple in SLC and left them feeling just as good if not better about their false religion.

Hello Watchman
You are right on with this post my brother. In a recent interview over at the Christian Books website, Ravi Zacharias tells us that books written by Malcolm Muggeridge, G.K. Chesterton, and C.S. Lewis were influential in his life. Muggeridge and Chesterton were both Roman Catholic, and I have heard Ravi quote them very often in his audio messages. C.S. Lewis believed in the make believe place called Purgatory also. In fact I heard Ravi quote these people so often that I researched them, and found the truth that way.
I was driving my car from PA to NYC one Sunday morning when I turned on the radio, and Ravi was preaching and speaking very highly of Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic. The Lord Jesus Christ delivered me out from the deception of Roman Catholicism in 1989, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they preach a FALSE GOSPEL. I am not impressed by Ravi Zacharias and his stand against FALSE “gods” when he tells me that he is influenced by people who follow that wicked system from which the Lord delievered me. Where is the spiritual discernment of this man Ravi Zacharias? How can Ravi speak and write books about false “gods” and yet have no problem with Roman Catholicism?
I believe that the speaking invitations would decrease DRAMATICALLY for many ministers if they truly took a STAND against the Roman Catholic Church. I also believe that SEVERE PERSECUTION would come from within the “CHURCH” if a person took a STAND against Rome. But that is exactly what is needed at this late hour. Sincerly Yours, Bill http://www.soulrefuge.wordpress.com/
